A Streetlight in My Yard

Each night as the lights go out
An orange glow infiltrates the blackness of my room
And lands gently on my Grandpaís hat
From the darkened abyss of the day gone by
The hat emerges
Dripping peace
And spreading warmth
Many the friends Iíve made with that hat
Many the smiles from a trick or a gag
Or just the sight of it on my head
But the day is forgotten
And for now, it hangs
Glowing with a powerful softness
Chasing away the shadows of the night
Iím not afraid of the dark
But, each night as the lights go out
A nightlight guards my room
It tucks me in
And watches me dream
