Never was the Golden Boy

Never was the golden boy
Despite what others thought
Never had the sparkling smile
Or the solid self esteem

Never was as positive
As others knew I was
Never had the dreamy eyes
Or the chin that wouldnít drop

Never was as proud of me
As others were to know me
Never was that confident
That I was the one they knew

I donít really know where the image started
Or what I did to keep it going
I donít know how I earned such confidence
Or such critical acclaim

Expectations are a scary thing
When you know you have to meet them
And every day Iím humbled
At the man the others see

Never was the golden boy
Probably never will be
But I never want to let them down
And so I keep on trying
