On a Stage with No Theater

On a stage with no theater
And no crowd to cheer him on
Just the friendly imaginations
Of the person who he'd like to think he really is
He plays
Entertaining those inside of him
With excuses and an actor's grin
Thinking that he's fooling them
And wondering who he could have been
Could be
But clutching to his fictional reality
The curtain's drawn
The makeup's on
And he has gone so far beyond
Being him
And the non-habitual drink will heal the world again

On a stage with no theater
And no lights to be turned on
Just the cheering and ovation
From the darkness of the crowd he thought he knew was his
He plays
Wondering what's inside of him
With shattered views and lowered chin
Struggling to fake a grin
And knowing who he could have been
Could be
And longing for his fictional reality
Forgotten dreams
Afraid it seems
Of the things he could have seen
Afraid to see
Afraid to take the pen in this biography

On a stage with no theater
And no lives that could be changed
Just the ones with reservations
Who smile and nod with fairy tale assuredy
He plays
Entertaining those inside of him
With illusions and an actor's grin
Forgetting that he's fooling them
Forgotten who he could have been
Could be
Just playing for his fictional reality
The curtain's drawn
The makeup's on
And he has gone so far beyond
Being him
And the critics clap their hands and he's a star again
