Relationships 101

I have the box still tucked away
And the notes that are inside
From a lady friend of yesterday
I guess I don't know why

I don't keep it because I love her still
I'm not living in the past
In retrospect, I somehow feel
I knew it wouldn't last

I guess I keep it because it holds
The good times that we shared
The memories of days of old
And words that showed she cared

It reminds me of the things I said
The things I thought I meant
And the happiness I often read
Within those notes she sent

It reminds me of the pain I felt
When I knew we had to part
And the devastating blow it dealt
When I watched me break her heart

But over time I've come to see
The precedent we set
The wisdom found in memory
Has silenced the regret

And looking back I feel okay
I'm thankful for the ride
So I have the box still tucked away
And the notes that are inside
